Sarajevo Declaration

  1. Placing the best interests of children and young people at the forefront of practice, with a focus on rights-based approaches, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global advocacy for their mental health and emotional well-being.
  2. Promoting therapeutic practices that integrate diverse professional perspectives, emphasizing a holistic view of child development—spanning physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual dimensions within an ecosystemic framework.
  3. Valuing meaningful engagement with children, young people, parents, carers, professionals, families, organizations, and communities to foster early intervention and preventative mental health care across disciplines.
  4. Encouraging creativity and nurturing human potential as essential components of emotional well-being, underscoring the need for international communication and collaboration to improve the health and well-being of children and young people.
  5. Acknowledging the multifaceted impact of adverse childhood experiences, and embracing research-informed, interdisciplinary approaches that learn from vulnerable children and young people, to improve care and support.
  6. Providing trauma-sensitive, responsive, and informed care tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of each child or young person, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration within a cultural and ecosystemic context.
  7. Recognizing the critical importance of safeguarding and child protection in professional practice, alongside empowering the voices of children and young people, with an awareness of intergenerational and transgenerational factors.
  8. Supporting the self-determination, agency, and resilience of children and young people, in partnership with care systems, while emphasizing the importance of youth voice and identity in shaping and delivering services.
  9. Deepening our understanding of issues related to belonging, autonomy, communication, and self-awareness in children and young people, in line with their developmental stages, and reinforcing the significance of interdisciplinary teamwork in promoting well-being.
  10. Highlighting the importance of research and best practices in services for children and young people, listening attentively to their lived experiences, alleviating their suffering, and integrating interdisciplinary insights to deliver holistic support.
